Science, Engineering and Technology connection
We tend to think of Science, engineering and technology as three separate things, they’re actually closely connected. Before we understand the connection let’s try to understand world we live in.
So, our world can be classified in two part’s as below:
- Natural World
- Designed World
The natural world consists of our common biosphere. It’s the layer of the planet Earth where life exists.
The artificial, man-made world includes business, economics, religion and politics which could be described as an engineered world.
Science, engineering and technology is helping humanity to move faster from the natural world to the designed world where we live today.
Science is the practical and intellectual pursuit that involves the study of the natural world through a systematic process of experimentation and observation. What makes science so great is all about the process. That process is called the scientific method. It helps improve our understand on how the natural world works.
Engineering uses scientific discoveries to design products and processes that meet society’s needs. It’s the application of knowledge in order to design, build, and maintain technologies. It seeks solutions for societal problems, needs, and wants. Engineering aims to produce the best solutions with given resources and constraints.
- Engineering Design
Technologies are the body of knowledge, systems, processes, and artifacts that results from engineering. It can be used to describe almost anything made by humans to solve a problem or meet a need. Technologies are anything made by humans to fill a need or desire.
- Data Analysis
- Problem Solving
- Mathematical modeling
Now that we understand all 3 words, let’s find out how they are connected.
Science helps us understand the behaviors by means of observations, experiments which intern helps improve our knowledge and understanding.
Engineering uses the gained knowledge through scientific methods to build and design solutions, products, new technologies and capabilities i.e. help build designed world.
Technologies help optimize engineering and science to be more efficient, effective and increasing the possibility of studying new things in natural world which was not possible earlier and the cycle keeps repeating.
